The following record of epitaphs was carefully transcribed from physical inspection
of the five New Fairfield cemeteries. Most of the Partially illegible inscriptions
were filled in by previously published and private sources. Some tombstones which
were previously recorded are now missing altogether. This book is an attempt to help
reserve part of the history and people of New Fairfield so that they may be
"Gone but not forgotten".
MOUNTAIN VIEW CEMETERY, SECTION 1, NEW FAIRFIELD CT.
Part 1 of 4, (names A thru O)
The Mountain View Cemetery of New Fairfield was formerly knownas "Turrell" or Wood Creek" Cemetery. It was established about
1810 in the Wood Creek district of town.
It was moved to its present site on Route 39 because of
the formation of Lake Candlewood; the old site now being
under the lake. Part of the former Leach Hollow Cemetery,
which was in the northeast section of town was also moved to
Mountain View since it was also flooded by the lake.
The first meeting of the Turrell Cemetery Association was
held on March 22, 1903. In 1916 the name was changed to Wood
Creek Cemetery. At a special meeting held on July 19, 1926 the
association accepted the new and present site. The new site being
part of the former Scudder farm located on Route 39 north of the
center of town. The Connecticut Light and Power Company, who was
responsible for creating Candlewood Lake, purchased the site for
the association and bore the expense of relocating and
transferring the remains.
On Nov. 2, 1931 a special meeting was held to adopt the
name of Mountain View Cemetery in place of Wood Creek for the
new location.
The oldest tombstone being that of Martin Kellogg, Jr.
who died May 3, 1813. On Feb. 14, 1878 Jesse Hine passed away
"age unknown, Born a slave, Died a freeman". There are several
unmarked graves and missing tombstones in this cemetery.
* Note*
Mountain View Cemetery is an active cemetery. This list of names covers
the time
frame from 1813 to 1981. Contact the Cemetery for later buriels.
